The Liberty High School Girl's Swim and Dive Team was recognized by the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) as a State Academic Champion for the 2016-2017 School Year. The CIF State Academic Team Champions program started in 1996 as a way to recognize and reward teams with the high collective grade point averages on an unweighted 4.0 scale, in their respective sport.
Liberty High School will receive a banner that can be displayed in their gym recognizing the girls' effort in the classrom. The team finished behind two other teams with a 3.95 collective GPA. Cardinal Newman in Santa Rosa had both their Girls Cross Country Team and Girls Golf team finish with a 4.0 collective GPA. Liberty High School and Salinas High School Boys Golf team each had a 3.95 GPA.
Head Coach Marc Urmston expressed his excitement over this honor, "The girls winning this award is so impressive, thinking about how busy life is and that practice time is in the evening every night. I don’t know how they are able to accomplish so much. I love how important grades are to them and how hard they work at the sport. It can be done, you can be a Scholar Athlete and succeed both in the classroom and in the pool. That team not only had one of the highest GPAs in the State of California, but also went undefeated and won their fourth straight league title. This is the second time they have received the honor of CIF State Academic Champion in four years and it is great to think that this is becoming a tradition.So proud and honored to be a part of these young ladies lives.
